Italy Design Week. Discover the Artisans of Le Marche

Join us in the historic hill towns of Le Marche for a week-long exploration of artisanal workshops, studios and galleries during our Italy Design Week.

This untouched region of Italy, where rolling Tuscan-esque hills meet the Adriatic coast, is home to a host of classical artisans and contemporary creatives.

Discover the work of incredible local sculptors, traditional shoemakers and bespoke lighting designers who make every beautiful piece by hand.

Admire some of the region’s famed architecture – where Renaissance rubs shoulders with Neoclassical – and shop for Italian antiques in the markets of one of the country’s most beautiful piazzas.

You’ll have the opportunity to shop for one-off pieces and decorative antiques that add unique character to your home, and have them shipped directly to your door.

At the end of the day, you’ll relax with traditional organic food and wine at our beautiful 17th century farmhouse in the picture-perfect hills of Le Marche.

Day One

Arrive at Ramuse and check in for seven nights.

Enjoy Aperitivo and a four course dinner and meet your hosts, David & Gary.

Day Two

Enjoy a morning at leisure before joining David & Gary on a trip to the antiques market in Ascoli Piceno. This beautiful town, full of Renaissance and Medieval architecture, was once an important trade route during the Roman period.

Its antiques market is held in the grand Piazza del Popolo, where market stalls brimming with Italian antiques are set against a backdrop of grand buildings and cobbled streets. Barter for one of a kind pieces (David will be on hand to translate!) from dealers who will ship all purchases back to your home.

Stop for Aperitivo in Caffe Meletti – an Art Deco cafe favoured by Hemmingway, before enjoying dinner in one of the city’s authentic restaurants.

Day Three

After breakfast, visit a local quarry and meet Alessandro, a skilled artisan who creates works of art out of the local travertine stone. Enjoy the chance to assist in designing your own tiles or wall hangings, and purchase some of Alessandro’s creations.

Later, enjoy a ceramics class from a local potter and create a beautiful piece to take home with you. Board our mini bus and head to Torre Di Palme, a beautiful borgo that overlooks the sea. Stroll through the towns cobbled streets, stop for a coffee or aperitivo or sit amongst the palm trees and admire the view of the Adriatic.

Dinner will be held at one of the towns charming restaurants.

Day Four

After breakfast, board our mini bus for a trip to Macerata – a large town in the hills of Le Marche bustling with magnificent architecture.

Visit the university and watch as international students learn the art of Fresco painting – a dying art in the region but fortunately students from all over the world are keeping this interest alive by learning the skills from a local artist.

Tour the Museums of Palazzo Buonaccorsi & Palazzo Ricci, beautiful buildings that house a multitude of ceiling frescoes in addition to numerous works of art, before taking a guided trip around the Sferisterio amphiteatre.

Return to Ramuse in time for a well deserved aperitivo and four course dinner.

Day Five

After breakfast, take a trip to a local antiques dealer, Marco, and shop for hidden treasures in his huge warehouse. Marco restores antiques, so rummage around for that little gem that would look great in your home, and Marco can bring it back to life and ship it to your door. Marco also hand carves great picture frames and pipes from wood, so enjoy a stroll around his Aladdin’s Cave and shop for hand made Italian products.

Enjoy an afternoon at leisure or take part in a basket weaving class at Ramuse.

Aperitvo and a four course dinner with wine will be served this evening.

Day Six

This morning, take a trip to nearby Amandola and meet Valeria, who runs her family’s lighting shop. Founded in 1953, the shop has gone from strength to strength, shipping products to customers throughout the world. Valeria maintains the essence of her grandparents shop, ensuring that all of their lighting pieces are created by hand, on site in a factory behind the shop.

Later, visit a local flooring specialist, Manuel, who creates beautiful hand made flooring. Some of Manuel’s customers have included large hotels in Milan and Rome, and as far afield as Russia and South Africa. If you are thinking of buying new flooring, bring your measurements and Manuel will design a scheme for your home and ship the flooring to you, with detailed instructions for your carpenter on how to lay it.

Back to Ramuse for a free afternoon before tonights Aperitivo and four course meal with wine.

Day Seven

After breakfast, take a short trip to the local town of Force, where its Friday market is a local attraction. Enjoy a cappuccino in the towns tiny cafe and watch the world go by, before visiting a newly opened studio that is dedicated to local artisans. Visit David’s own stone sculpting lab and try your hand at carving a souvenir to take home with you.

Later, a local shoemaker, Gabriele, will share secrets of his family’s shoemaking business, where items are shipped to the fashion houses in Milan and Tuscany. In Force though, they are on sale for half the price! Try your hand at creating a leather belt or bag, or stroll around the shop and watch Gabriele at work.

Return to Ramuse for Aperitivo and a four course dinner with wine.

Accommodation owner Paolo used to travel between London and Le Marche shipping truffles to top chefs. Nowadays, he can be found at his grandparents farmhouse, lovingly converted into the Agriturismo Ramuse – a rustic haven with restaurant that provides locally sourced, organic food.

Warm cosy bedrooms with terracotta flooring and wooden ceiling beams provide Italian country charm, gardens offer sweeping views of valleys and mountains, and then there’s the food.

Served on long rustic tables beside the fire or beneath the vine-covered terrace, enjoy organic meals made from fresh produce grown on Ramuse’s farm.

You will also have made plenty of new friends, not only our team of artisans and fellow guests, but with the donkeys, chickens, truffle-hunting dogs and cats that share Ramuse with Paolo and his visitors.
